Government declares March 20 public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Fitr

The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, a public holiday to mark Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar.

In a gazette notice dated March 18, Murkomen said the declaration was made under Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, Friday, the 20th March, 2026, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” the notice read.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, engage in prayers, charity and spiritual reflection.

The day is traditionally celebrated with special prayers, communal meals and acts of generosity, including giving to the less fortunate.

The declaration paves the way for Muslims across the country to gather in mosques and open grounds for Eid prayers before joining their families and communities in celebrations.

Government officials also noted that security agencies and relevant authorities will be on high alert during the holiday period to ensure the safety of citizens, particularly in major towns and places of worship.

In recent years, the government has continued to recognize religious diversity by formally marking key religious holidays, reinforcing national unity and inclusivity.

The announcement also comes at a time when many Kenyans are travelling to celebrate with loved ones, with authorities urging the public to exercise caution, especially in light of ongoing heavy rains reported in several parts of the country.

Murkomen wished all Muslims a peaceful and joyous Eid celebration, calling on Kenyans to embrace unity, compassion and generosity during the festive period.
