Presenter Kai reminisces on losing multi-million deal for being ‘too cheap’

Kenyan content creator Presenter Kai has opened up about a painful career lesson that cost him a lucrative, multi-million deal, a missed opportunity he now attributes to poor personal branding and underpricing himself.

In a candid revelation, Presenter Kai shared how what seemed like a promising breakthrough quickly slipped through his fingers due to a series of missteps that, at the time, he did not consider significant.

The media personality explained that he had been invited to Nairobi for a high-level meeting with a potential sponsor for an influencer role, a deal that could have significantly elevated his career.

Eager and optimistic, Presenter Kai travelled from Nakuru to Nairobi, but his choice of transport would later become a key factor in how he was perceived.

He disclosed that upon arriving in the city, he opted to take a motorbike, commonly known as a bodaboda, to the meeting venue. While the decision seemed practical at the time, it ultimately worked against him.

According to Kai, his appearance during the meeting did little to help his case either.

He admitted that his outfit did not do him justice, unintentionally projecting a less professional image than expected in such a high-stakes environment.

The situation took a further hit during salary negotiations.

When asked how much he expected to be paid, Kai revealed that he quoted a figure of Sh100,000 per month, an amount he now believes significantly undervalued his worth and the scale of the opportunity at hand.

Despite the meeting proceeding smoothly on the surface, things quickly went quiet afterwards.

Kai recalled that he was assured he would be contacted, but that call never came. It wasn’t until years later that he would finally understand what went wrong.

In a reflective Facebook post, Kai shared the full story:

“Back in 2022 I was called for a job in Nairobi ya influncer, si nikatoka Nakuru hadi Nairobi na ma3 then kufika tao nikachukua piki hadi kwa office. Kwa meza ya ku negotiate nikaulizwa nataka nilipwe pesa ngapi, nikasema 100k per month. After hapo nikaambiwa nitaitwa but sikuwaiitwa tena. 4 years later one of the officials tumepatana akanikumbusha the reason why sikupewa hiyo job ni ju waliniona nikiingia na pikipiki wakajua tu basi hata hiyo kazi sitaezana nayo na pia am not worth hiyo 100k nimeitisha ju ya pia nguo nilikuwa nimevaa ziliniangusha bei. Mnaojiita influencers, branding ni ya maana sana kwa kazi zenu.”

Kai revealed that during a later encounter with one of the officials involved in the deal, he was told the harsh truth, that his arrival on a bodaboda, his dressing, and even the amount he quoted all contributed to the perception that he was not the right fit for the role.

The experience has since become a defining lesson for the presenter, who now uses his story to advise upcoming influencers and content creators on the importance of branding.

In today’s highly competitive digital space, perception often carries as much weight as talent, and Kai’s story highlights how small details can make or break big opportunities.

His message is clear: how you present yourself, from your appearance to how you value your work, can determine whether doors open or close.
