Man, 24, dies in Nyandarua house fire caused by jiko

A 24-year-old man was found dead after a night fire razed his house in Mutarakwa village, Kageraini sub-location in South Kinangop, Nyandarua County.

According to police the incident occurred in the early hours of April 10, 2026.

A relative of the deceased reported that he was awakened at around 2:45 a.m. by a loud bang. Upon stepping outside, he discovered his nephew’s house engulfed in flames.

Efforts by neighbors who responded to the alarm to contain the fire proved futile, as the blaze quickly consumed the structure and property of unknown value.

The following morning at around 8:00 a.m., residents returned to the scene and discovered the charred remains of the house owner, identified as Erick Mboko Ndung’u, a casual laborer, inside the burnt house.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been caused by a jiko (charcoal stove), which was found next to the body.

Police processed the scene and moved the remains to Engineer County Hospital Mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.
