Lawyers demand justice in killing of colleague Tom Ouya

The Law Society of Kenya condemned the brutal killing of advocate Tom Ouya Imbukwa, describing his death as a shocking and devastating loss to the legal fraternity.

In a statement, LSK president Charles Kanjama said Wednesday they had learned “with profound shock and grief” that the advocate was assaulted, tortured, and ultimately murdered by unknown individuals under circumstances that remain unclear.

The murder is believed to have occurred in Vihiga County.

The motive of the said torture and murder was not immediately revealed.

Police said they were investigating the incident.

The LSK extended its condolences to Imbukwa’s family, friends, and colleagues, pledging solidarity during what it termed an “unimaginably difficult time.” It also assured the family of full legal support as investigations and any subsequent proceedings unfold.

Calling for urgent action, the lawyers’ body appealed to members of the public with any information to come forward and report to authorities, assuring them that their safety and anonymity would be protected.

At the same time, Kanjama urged the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to carry out swift, credible, and transparent investigations. It emphasized that if any state actors were involved, they must be held fully accountable.

The LSK further signaled that it will announce additional measures once more details surrounding the killing emerge, maintaining that justice for Imbukwa is non-negotiable.

“We will not rest until those responsible are brought to book,” the statement said, warning against what it described as a growing threat to members of the legal profession.

The society reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability, vowing that “the hand of the law is long” and will reach all those behind the killing.

Other colleagues mourned Ouya as a good and dedicated lawyer.

Lawyer Phannie Kwegah said she was gutted to learn about the death.

“Today, I’ve learnt of his passing with a heavy heart and a tightness I can’t quite shake. Such a sudden, cruel, and inhumane loss. I’m gutted. Tom, you did not deserve this. Anyway, fuesi khuli khuluchendo! Rest in peace, my brother Counsel Tom Ouya Imbukwa. May justice find those responsible,” she posted on her X.
