Probe as thugs break into mosque, steal electronics, in Soy


Police in Soy Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, are investigating a break-in incident at Al Huda Mosque in Kamwaura village.

The incident was reported at Kuinet Police Station on Tuesday by the mosque’s imam who discovered the theft upon arriving for morning prayers.

According to the police, unknown individuals broke into the mosque and stole several items from the prayer hall. The stolen items included an amplifier and two speakers.

The suspects also took 20 water taps from the ablution area. In addition, they made away with a bicycle too.

Police said they had launched investigations into the incident, and efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible are ongoing. On Wednesday, the police confirmed the incidents are under investigations.

Such incidents where thugs target houses of prayer have been on the rise. The gangs target electronic goods for stealing.

Police say statistics show that criminals target and break into churches for electronic goods, with at least one case reported weekly.

Investigations also showed those behind the incidents are locals who worship at the affected institutions.

Furthermore, police have also been staging operations targeting shops handling the stolen electronics as part of the efforts to trace and recover the stolen equipment.

The investigators have encouraged managers of the institutions to always report the incidents to help in managing the crimes.

Meanwhile, police in Kuria, Migori County are looking for gunmen who raided a homestead and beat up the owner while demanding a copy of his land title deed.

Police said the incident occurred on the night of May 5.

The gunmen visited the home of a 31-year-old man and demanded the title deed while assaulting him as he raised an alarm.

Neighbours who responded had to flee for safety after the men shot to the air as they left the scene.

Witnesses and police said that the gunmen shot to the air twice as they escaped the scene.

The four men were carrying an AK47 rifle and other weapons. It is also reported that they managed to escape without the documents.

Police said they are pursuing the gang on the prowl in the area.

The area has been experiencing a spike in armed crime amid efforts to address the same.
