Groom Jailed for 45 Years After Killing Best Man Hours After Wedding

What was supposed to be one of the happiest days of his life ended in tragedy after a Michigan groom killed his lifelong friend and groomsman just hours after saying “I do.”

James Shirah, now 24, has been sentenced to between 30 and 45 years in prison for the shocking death of his close friend, Terry Lewis Taylor Jr., following a drunken argument after Shirah’s wedding celebrations in Flint, Michigan.

The fatal incident happened on August 30, 2024, after Shirah married Savanah Collier. According to prosecutors, the wedding celebrations had moved from a local pizzeria to a house party where tensions escalated after an argument broke out among the guests.

Authorities said Shirah, who had allegedly been drinking heavily throughout the day, drove away from the scene in an SUV before returning moments later and deliberately striking Taylor at high speed.

The 29-year-old victim suffered severe injuries and later died.

The case quickly attracted national attention because of the horrifying timing of the killing, occurring only hours after the wedding ceremony.

Prosecutors described it as a senseless act fueled by alcohol, anger and reckless decision-making.

Initially charged with open murder, Shirah later pleaded no contest in April 2026 to reduced charges including second-degree murder, driving with a suspended licence causing death, and failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident.

During sentencing on May 11, 2026, Judge Khary Hanible acknowledged that Shirah had no notable criminal history but made it clear that the consequences of his actions were irreversible.

“Mr. Shirah, I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer,” the judge told the emotional courtroom.

Shirah appeared emotional during the hearing and repeatedly apologised to Taylor’s family.

He insisted he never intended to kill his best friend.

“The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse,” Shirah told the court.

“I will forever be sorry.”

Court records show he received concurrent prison terms of 10 to 15 years for the traffic-related charges, though the murder sentence remains the dominant punishment.

He was also credited with 618 days already served in jail and ordered to pay fines and court costs totaling £334.

He will become eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

The victim’s relatives delivered emotional statements in court, describing Taylor as a loving father and family man whose life was cut short in a moment of violence.

Reports indicate Taylor left behind four children and a fiancée.

Meanwhile, Shirah’s wife, Collier, is also facing legal consequences.

Prosecutors accused the newlywed couple of leaving the scene and delaying reporting the incident, complicating the investigation.

Collier later pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and is expected to be sentenced separately.

The disturbing case has continued to spark conversations online about alcohol abuse, road rage and how quickly celebrations can spiral into devastating violence.

What began as a wedding day filled with joy ultimately ended with a funeral, prison sentence and two families permanently changed forever.
