DCI Arrests Former KDF Soldier-Turned-Thug, Recover Gvt Ammunition And Regalia

A former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) special forces officer has been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following an operation targeting criminal activities in Nairobi’s Eastlands and surrounding areas.

The suspect, identified as Rodgers Omondi Odhiambo, was apprehended by officers from the Operations Support Unit (OSU) after detectives received intelligence reports and tips from members of the public regarding his alleged involvement in criminal operations within the city.

According to investigators, the operation culminated in a raid at the suspect’s hideout located in the Kayole dumpsite area, where detectives moved swiftly and arrested him without incident.

Following the arrest, Odhiambo reportedly guided officers to his residence, where a thorough search led to the recovery of several government stores and ammunition believed to belong to security agencies.

Among the items recovered were one round of 9mm ammunition, three military shirts, a military smoke jacket, military trousers, military shorts, two military working dresses, a green military bag, and a military jackknife.

Authorities believe the recovered items may have been unlawfully retained after the suspect exited military service, raising concerns about the circulation of military gear and ammunition in civilian hands.

Investigators are now seeking to establish whether the items were connected to ongoing criminal activities in Nairobi and neighbouring regions.

The arrest comes amid heightened security operations in Nairobi’s Eastlands area, where law enforcement agencies have intensified crackdowns on organized gangs, armed robberies, and criminal networks that have been terrorizing residents.

Security experts have previously warned that the misuse of military regalia by civilians and former officers poses a major security threat, especially when such items are used to impersonate security personnel or facilitate criminal activities.

Odhiambo was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, where he faced charges of unlawful possession of ammunition and government stores.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges before the court.

The court granted him a bond of Sh1 million with an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000 pending the hearing of the case.

The matter is scheduled for mention on June 2, 2026, as detectives continue with investigations into the source of the recovered ammunition and the possible extent of the suspect’s alleged criminal activities.
