A suspected drug trafficker has been arrested in Bomet County after detectives recovered approximately 1,600 rolls of cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang, during an intelligence-led operation.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Bernard Marwa, was apprehended after detectives intercepted a Toyota Succeed, registration number KDR 477X, along the Silibwet–Bomet Road.
According to investigators, the driver ignored orders to stop and sped off towards Kapsimotwa Shopping Centre, triggering a dramatic chase by law enforcement officers.
“Upon being signalled to stop, the driver defied officers’ instructions and attempted to flee, prompting a pursuit,” detectives said.
The chase came to an end when the vehicle entered a narrow road, forcing the occupants to abandon it and escape on foot.
While two unidentified passengers managed to evade arrest, detectives successfully apprehended Marwa at the scene.
A subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of eight bags containing approximately 200 rolls of cannabis each, bringing the total haul to an estimated 1,600 rolls of the narcotic substance.
“Detectives recovered eight bags loaded with cannabis sativa concealed inside the vehicle. The recovered drugs have been secured as exhibits,” the investigators stated.
Authorities have detained both the vehicle and the seized narcotics as investigations continue. Detectives are also pursuing the two suspects who escaped during the operation.
The suspect has since been processed for arraignment in court as police intensify efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within the region.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reiterated its commitment to combating narcotics-related crimes and urged members of the public to continue sharing information that can aid in the fight against illegal drug trade.
