DP Kindiki: Rironi–Mau Summit Highway Expansion Will Transform Transport and Trade

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has expressed satisfaction with the progress of the ongoing expansion of the Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Summit highway, describing the project as a major milestone in Kenya’s infrastructure transformation agenda.

The multi-billion-shilling project involves upgrading the existing road into a four-lane dual carriageway, with some sections being expanded into a six-lane superhighway to cater for increasing traffic volumes along the busy corridor.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the construction works, Kindiki said the project was finally turning a long-standing national dream into reality after decades of delays.

“What a relief to see a national aspiration that remained elusive for decades being realised,” Kindiki said after inspecting various sections of the highway and interacting with contractors and road construction workers.

The Deputy President noted that the expanded highway would address persistent traffic congestion that has affected motorists travelling between Nairobi and western Kenya, particularly during peak travel periods.

“Soon, this expansive carriageway will sort out the frustrating traffic snarl-ups, the fatal road accidents, and the disappointment of lost travel time,” he said.

Kindiki emphasized that the road project would not only improve mobility but also boost economic growth by enhancing connectivity between key regions of the country and neighboring states.

“It will open our economy, expand opportunities, save human life, and enhance trade within Kenya and Eastern and Central Africa,” he stated.

The highway serves as one of Kenya’s most important transport corridors, linking Nairobi to the Rift Valley, western Kenya and the wider East African region. Once completed, it is expected to improve the movement of goods and passengers while supporting regional trade and investment.

Expressing confidence in the pace of implementation, Kindiki said he was encouraged by the progress made so far and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the project.

“I am happy with the progress and gratified to witness yet another milestone in the journey of the transformation and modernization of our country,” he said.

The government expects the upgraded highway to significantly reduce travel times, improve road safety and stimulate economic activity along the corridor once construction is completed.
