The officers reported encountering the victim, who was allegedly armed with a panga and a spear. Police describe him as a suspected member of a panga-wielding gang linked to a series of robbery and housebreaking incidents in Hindi Township and say he had recently been released from prison.

Police allege the suspect ignored orders to stop and surrender his weapons and instead advanced towards one of the officers in a threatening manner. The officer fired a warning shot, but the suspect allegedly continued advancing, prompting the officer to open fire.

The suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen, with the bullet exiting through his back. He was initially taken to Mephi Private Hospital in Hindi before being transferred to Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Police recovered a panga and a spear at the scene, which were seized as exhibits. The G3 rifle used by the NPR officer has also been surrendered and placed in the station armoury as part of the investigation.

Authorities said the officer discharged three rounds of 7.62mm ammunition during the incident. Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
