Form three student dies in suspected electrocution at Migori mining site


A 16-year-old Form Three student died in a suspected electrocution incident at an artisanal mining site in Nyalgunga area, Migori County.

The deceased, identified as Justus Otieno Ochola, a student at St Peter’s Abwao Senior School, reportedly died after entering a mine shaft about 150 feet deep at the mining site in Suna West Sub-County, police said.

The incident was reported prompting officers from Masara Police Station to visit the scene.

According to preliminary police reports, Ochola had begun his shift at an artisanal mining site when he entered the deep shaft.

Police said the teenager was allegedly fatally electrocuted by a winch used to haul ore from the mine.

Officers found the body with blood oozing from the mouth and an injury on the left upper arm.

The scene was processed and police commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.

The body was removed and taken to Migori Level Four Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.

Police are expected to establish how the electrical equipment at the mining site was being operated and whether safety measures were in place at the time of the incident.

And a 17-year-old boy was found dead along the shores of Lake Victoria in Uhanya Village, Siaya County, in what police suspect was a drowning incident.

The body was discovered floating near Uhanya Beach in Usenge Sub-location, West Yimbo Location, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the deceased was suspected to have gone fishing along the shores of Lake Victoria before his death.

The body was swollen but had no visible injuries, according to preliminary police observations. He was wearing a black T-shirt and black trousers.

The boy’s father told police that his son had been suffering from epilepsy.

Crime scene officers documented the scene before the body was moved to Bondo Hospital mortuary, where it was preserved pending an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Elsewhere, a 38-year-old man is feared drowned in River Gucha in Gucha South Sub-County, Kisii County, after he was reportedly overwhelmed by strong currents while swimming.

The man, identified as Nelson Ongabu Marando, a resident of Bwogisi Village in Ikoro Sub-location, Marongo Location, drowned on Tuesday morning, according to police.

Police officers visited the scene and found Marando’s clothes lying on the riverbank.

Preliminary investigations indicated that Marando had been swimming in the river when he dived into a deep section and was overwhelmed by the water.

Children who were standing nearby reportedly did not see him emerge from the river.

A search and recovery operation was underway, with police and local residents working to retrieve the man’s body.

Police said investigations into the incident were ongoing.
