Meru Police Arrest Suspect, Recover Assorted Suspected Stolen Items in Anti-Crime Operation

Police officers in Meru County have arrested a suspect believed to be part of a network dealing in stolen property following a targeted operation aimed at disrupting markets that fuel theft-related crimes.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Maua Police Station conducted a raid in the Maili Tatu area after receiving intelligence linking a resident to the purchase and concealment of stolen goods.

During the operation, officers searched the suspect’s residence and recovered a variety of items believed to have been stolen from members of the public.

The recovered property included 57 mobile phone covers of different models and colours, eight mobile phones, five television remote controls, audio equipment, TV stands and several other household items suspected to be proceeds of crime.

“The suspect was arrested and is currently in police custody pending arraignment in court,” the National Police Service said in a statement.

Police noted that offences such as muggings, burglaries and housebreakings are often sustained by individuals who create a ready market for stolen goods, making it difficult for victims to recover their property.

“By purchasing and concealing stolen items, such individuals encourage criminal activity and contribute to losses suffered by members of the public,” the statement added.

The National Police Service warned that buying, handling or storing suspected stolen property is a criminal offence and urged members of the public to avoid engaging in such activities.

“NPS remains committed to intensifying operations against criminals and their accomplices, disrupting markets for stolen goods and bringing offenders to justice,” the Service stated.

Police further emphasized the importance of public cooperation in fighting crime, saying community support remains critical in enhancing security and protecting residents from criminal activities.
