Police have intensified the crackdown on drug trafficking networks after arresting five suspects and recovering large quantities of cannabis sativa in coordinated operations carried out in Mombasa, Kitengela and Busia counties.
According to authorities, detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and other security agencies intercepted the narcotics in separate intelligence-led operations targeting drug traffickers.
In Mombasa, ANU detectives acting on a tip-off intercepted a lorry, registration number KDL 220P, suspected of transporting illegal drugs.
“A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of nine sacks of cannabis sativa weighing approximately 450 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Sh12.15 million,” police said.
The lorry driver, Emmanuel Ndoro, and his alleged accomplice, Paul Ogolla, were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
Meanwhile, in Kitengela, detectives raided Honey Pot Bar following intelligence reports and recovered two bales of cannabis sativa, 16 rolls of bhang and a zip-lock bag containing suspected cannabis.
“The operation resulted in the arrest of Catherine Nzuki, who was found in possession of the narcotics,” investigators stated.
In a separate operation in Busia County, officers laid an ambush in the Butula Mission area and intercepted a vehicle registration number KBR 254P.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered two sacks packed with cannabis sativa.
“The occupants of the vehicle, identified as Ibrahim Oduor Otieno and Alma Nzimi Muiya, were arrested and escorted to Busia Police Station together with the recovered exhibits,” police said.
Authorities confirmed that all five suspects remain in custody and are undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.
The seized narcotics and impounded vehicles have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue.
Law enforcement agencies reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and protecting communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.
“The crackdown on drug traffickers will continue as security agencies intensify efforts to curb the production, transportation and distribution of illegal drugs across the country,” police stated.
The latest arrests form part of an ongoing nationwide campaign targeting narcotics syndicates and other criminal networks involved in the illegal drug trad.
