Government Addresses Cybersecurity Incident Affecting President’s Official Website


The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy has confirmed a cybersecurity incident involving the official website of the President, assuring the public that government digital systems remain secure.

In a statement issued by Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy William Kabogo Gitau, the ministry said the incident was detected and the ICT Authority immediately activated established response measures to contain the situation.

The government said access to the Presidential website was temporarily restricted as a precautionary step to allow technical teams to conduct containment, forensic analysis and restoration efforts.

“Upon detection of the incident, ICT Authority immediately activated established cybersecurity incident response protocols,” the statement read.

The ministry said mitigation measures have already been put in place and efforts are ongoing to restore normal access to the website.

“As a precautionary measure, access to the Presidential website was temporarily restricted to facilitate containment, forensic analysis and restoration efforts,” the statement added.

The government emphasized that investigations so far have not revealed any compromise of sensitive information or unauthorized access to government data.

“At this time, there is no evidence of unauthorized access to sensitive data, data exfiltration, or loss of information,” the ministry stated.

The ICT Authority is working alongside relevant government agencies and technical partners to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the extent of the cybersecurity breach.

“Government systems and digital services remain secure and operational,” the statement assured.

The ministry said a comprehensive forensic investigation is underway to identify the cause of the incident and strengthen existing cybersecurity measures.

The incident comes as Kenya continues to expand its digital government services, with authorities emphasizing the importance of protecting public systems against emerging cyber threats.
