Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has declined to openly declare whether he will contest Kenya’s presidency in the 2027 General Election, insisting that the country’s politics should not revolve around his personal ambitions.
Speaking during an interview with Yvonne Okwara on Citizen TV on Tuesday, July 28, Sifuna avoided giving a direct answer when pressed about growing calls from supporters urging him to challenge President William Ruto in the next election.
Instead of confirming or denying his intentions, the outspoken senator told Kenyans that any decision to seek the country’s top seat would not be made in secrecy.
“If I was going to run for Presidency, do you think I would announce it in the dark? I would do that in broad daylight,” Sifuna said.
Sifuna also downplayed the intense public focus on his political future, saying the discussion should not be centered on him alone.
“Don’t make this thing all about Sifuna,” he added.
His remarks come amid increasing speculation over his role in the opposition following weeks of massive “Linda Mwananchi” rallies, where thousands of supporters have openly endorsed him as one of the faces of the movement heading into the 2027 General Election.
Growing calls for Sifuna to run
In recent weeks, Sifuna’s popularity has surged, particularly among younger Kenyans and opposition supporters.
During rallies across western Kenya, chants of support for his possible presidential bid have become common, with some leaders publicly asking other opposition heavyweights to back him.
The Nairobi senator has also attracted attention after supporters voluntarily contributed money toward opposition activities, a rare occurrence in Kenyan politics where politicians traditionally finance campaigns themselves.
Although Sifuna remained non-committal during the Citizen TV interview, his latest remarks have done little to silence speculation that he could eventually enter the race.
Political profile continues to rise
Sifuna has emerged as one of the government’s fiercest critics, regularly taking on President William Ruto’s administration over governance, devolution, healthcare reforms and constitutional issues.
His recent political activities, including opposition rallies and consultations with leaders from different regions, have fueled conversations about his national ambitions ahead of 2027.
The senator, however, maintained that the focus should remain on offering Kenyans solutions rather than personalities.
His carefully worded response has been interpreted by political observers as neither confirming nor ruling out a presidential bid, leaving the door open as the country’s political landscape continues to take shape.
For now, Sifuna insists that if he ever decides to seek the presidency, Kenyans will hear it from him openly.
