A 30-year-old man died and his wife sustained serious burns after a house caught fire in Jogoo Village, Kitutu Central, Kisii County.
The incident occurred at around midnight, with police receiving a report at about 12:45pm on Friday.
Police officers visited the scene and established that the timber-built house had been completely destroyed by fire.
The house was occupied by a caretaker couple.
The woman suffered serious burns to her back and legs. She was rushed to Ram Hospital, where she was admitted in stable condition.
Her husband was fatally burned and his body was reportedly beyond recognition.
Members of the public managed to contain the fire, but the house and household property of unknown value were reduced to ashes.
Police processed, photographed and documented the scene before the man’s body was moved to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
The cause of the fire had not been established, with police investigations ongoing.
Elsewhere, a 76-year-old man died after a fire broke out at his wooden house in Bypass Village, Kitiri Sub-location, North Kinangop, Nyandarua County.
The incident occurred at around 5:10am on Friday, with police and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers responding to the scene.
The deceased, identified as Jeremiah Gitau Thethere, was reportedly sleeping alone in the three-roomed wooden house when the fire broke out.
Police said he had been using a lit charcoal jiko inside the house at the time.
Members of the public managed to put out the fire, but the house and its contents were completely destroyed. The victim was burned beyond recognition.
The estimated value of the destroyed house and household property was put at about Sh500,000.
Police officers processed the scene before the deceased’s body was removed and taken to the Engineer County Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting an autopsy.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been caused by the charcoal jiko, although investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
And police in Gucha South, Kisii County, have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the death of his 54-year-old father following an alleged assault at their home in Tabaka Centre.
The deceased, identified as Nyagwanga Jared Obonyo, was pronounced dead on arrival at Tabaka Mission Hospital on Friday.
According to preliminary police investigations, Obonyo was last seen with his son who had reportedly picked him up from a neighbour’s home.
Police said the son was allegedly angered after demanding that his father produce a packet of Sportsman cigarettes.
The two then proceeded to their home, where the suspect is alleged to have locked the gate before assaulting his father.
Neighbours reportedly heard the deceased crying for help but were unable to intervene because the gate had been locked.
The suspect was also allegedly armed with a panga during the assault.
After some time, the suspect was reportedly seen carrying his father on a bicycle as he took him to Tabaka Mission Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police visited the scene and processed and documented it.
The deceased was found with a swollen face, blood stains around his mouth and bruises on his right hand.
His body was moved to the Tabaka Mission Hospital mortuary, where it was preserved pending a postmortem examination.
The suspect was taken into police custody and is expected to be arraigned at Etago Law Courts on August 17, 2026, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death continue.
