Police launch probe after G3 rifle, 20 rounds go missing in Kisii

Police in Gucha South, Kisii County, have launched investigations after a G3 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition was reported stolen from a police officer’s house at Riosiri Patrol Base.

The firearm was reported missing on September 1, 2026, by the officer in charge of the armoury at the patrol base.

According to the police, the officer told police that he had removed the G3 rifle from a steel box where firearms are normally secured and hidden it under a mattress in his bedroom on August 31.

He said that when he attempted to return the firearm to the steel box on Tuesday morning, he discovered that it was missing.

Investigators who visited the scene reportedly found no signs of forced entry or breaking.

The circumstances under which the firearm and ammunition disappeared remain unclear.

Police officers have launched a search of the surrounding area in an effort to recover the weapon and ammunition.

The officer who was responsible for the firearms, has been placed in police custody to assist investigators in establishing how the weapon went missing.
