A 67-year-old woman was hacked to death by unknown assailants in her compound in Malindi, Kilifi County, in an incident police are investigating as a suspected witchcraft-related killing.
Wakesho Francis Righa, a resident of Kajejini Village in Kijiwetanga Sub-location, was attacked according to police.
The attackers allegedly hacked her several times on the back of the head using a sharp object before fleeing.
Righa was found lying in a pool of blood in her front yard, next to a charcoal burner that investigators believe she had been preparing to light to cook food.
Her 10-year-old granddaughter, who lived with her, had reportedly gone to a neighbour’s home about 50 metres away to play.
When the girl returned, she found her grandmother lying motionless in the compound and raised the alarm.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Righa had previously been accused by some people of practising witchcraft.
Police officers visited the scene and documented the evidence.
The woman’s body was removed to Malindi Sub-County Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
Police have launched investigations to identify the attackers and establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
And a 35-year-old man died after he was attacked with an arrow by an unknown assailant outside his home in Malindi, Kilifi County.
Justin Kazungu Mohamed was attacked at about 9:30pm on Friday shortly after returning home from work at Mshongoleni Central Village, Mere Sub-location, Ganda Location.
According to a police report, Mohamed handed vegetables to his wife to prepare supper before sitting outside his compound.
He was attacked moments later, with the arrow striking him on the right side of the chest near the armpit.
The assailant fled after the attack, and the motive remained unknown.
Mohamed was rushed to Malindi Sub-County Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. He was later pronounced dead while receiving medical attention.
His body was moved to the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
The incident was reported to Kakuyuni Police Station by Samson Iha Yaa, a village elder from the area.
Police have launched investigations to establish the identity of the attacker and the motive for the killing.
