Controversial content creator Andrew Kibe has dramatically pulled his planned boxing showdown with Mumias East MP Peter Salasya away from Oga Obinna’s Vurugu 3 event, declaring that he does not want to work with the media personality.
Kibe has, however, insisted that his much-hyped clash with Salasya is still on and is expected to happen in December, but under a different and independent platform.
The latest development has thrown a new twist into a boxing spectacle that had initially been shaping up as one of the biggest celebrity fights in Kenya, with Obinna previously positioning himself as the promoter and promising a multimillion-shilling purse.
Kibe:
“Obinna Is Out”
Speaking in an interview published on Friday, September 4, Andrew Kibe confirmed that the proposed fight had taken a different direction.
“We’ve gone a different way,” Kibe said.
He was even more direct when asked about Obinna’s involvement, declaring:
“Obinna is out. I don’t want to work with him. Same idea, but different platform.”
Andrew Kibe also appeared unhappy with the financial arrangement that had previously been proposed for the fight, claiming Obinna wanted him and Salasya to fight under his event for what he considered inadequate compensation.
“He wanted us to fight in his event and give us some small chums,” Kibe said.
The outspoken content creator argued that the Kibe-Salasya fight could generate substantial money if handled independently.
“There’s a lot of money to be made in that shit. Why would I go give my whole birthright to Obinna?” he remarked.
Kibe said the new organisers were considering an escrow arrangement as they work on the financial and contractual details surrounding the bout.
Kibe Had Earlier Questioned Whether He Could Trust Obinna
Kibe’s latest comments are not entirely surprising.
Months before the latest fallout, the former radio presenter had already expressed reservations about working with Obinna.
In July, Kibe revealed that he had received communication from one of Obinna’s managers indicating that the fight was moving forward, but he immediately raised doubts about whether the promoter could deliver.
“The Kibe-Salasya fight might be a reality. Today I got a message from one of Obinna’s managers, and it said the fight looks like it’s on,” Kibe said.
He then added:
“I don’t know if I can trust Obinna to see this thing through. I am dealing with villagers here, so I have to be careful.”
At the time, Kibe also made it clear that he was not necessarily opposed to doing business with Obinna if the financial benefits were right.
“I am not working with him yet. I am still watching but if there is money, there is money. So, I should not buy a Mercedes S550 because I have ill feelings? Learn to be magnanimous,” he said.
Obinna Had Promised Sh2 Million
The disagreement is particularly notable because Obinna had initially been instrumental in bringing the proposed showdown closer to reality.
After Salasya challenged Kibe to a boxing match, Obinna publicly accepted the opportunity to stage it as part of Vurugu 3.
In a social media post, Obinna wrote:
“@peter_salasya, your wish is my command. Talk to him to accept the challenge. We start by putting in 2M hard cash. I’m sure it can get to 5M #Vurugu3.”
He followed it with another provocative remark:
“Salasya doesn’t really need the money; his opponent does. Let’s go!!!”
Obinna’s proposal was based on an initial Sh2 million purse, with the possibility of the amount rising to Sh5 million through sponsorships.
Salasya Had Wanted a Live Contract Signing
At one point, the fight appeared to be heading towards a formal agreement under Obinna’s Vurugu 3 banner.
After Kibe accepted Salasya’s challenge, the Mumias East MP called on Obinna to organise a public contract-signing ceremony.
“Obinna, plan for a day next week live on your show; we sign papers for the Vurugu on December 1,” Salasya said.
Obinna was equally enthusiastic at the time, writing:
“I think we have a MATCH!! KIBE vs SALASYA #vurugu3 #obinnatvstudios Hebu mafans wa Kibe waconfirm kama ni real account. @peter_salasya anza Tizi gathee.”
The promoter also urged Kibe’s supporters to encourage him to sign the contract so that the fight could officially become part of the Vurugu 3 card.
“Fans wa Kibe mwambieni asign contract tutoe fight card,” Obinna later said.
Kibe Still Wants to Fight Salasya
Despite breaking away from Obinna, Kibe has made it clear that his beef with Salasya has not been cancelled.
“In December, I’m going to be getting into a boxing ring with Salasya,” Kibe stated.
He also revealed that the contract was already on his phone and said preparations for the showdown were moving ahead.
The 50-year-old content creator is expected to begin intensive training and has indicated that he will work with Barak Jekuzi and Jekuzi’s trainer.
Kibe has also brushed aside concerns about his age, saying:
“But I don’t feel 50.”
He believes his reach could also give him an advantage against the younger legislator.
How the Kibe-Salasya Fight Started
The proposed bout grew out of a long-running war of words between Kibe and Salasya, with the two personalities repeatedly exchanging jabs online.
What began as social-media confrontations gradually evolved into a potentially lucrative celebrity boxing spectacle.
By July, Obinna had even shared WhatsApp conversations indicating that Salasya had agreed to fight Kibe, while urging the MP to begin training.
Obinna told him:
“You and Kibe will have the same contract, start training.”
He also appealed to fans to help him obtain Kibe’s contact details so that contracts could be sent to the fighters.
Vurugu 3 Now Faces a Major Twist
Obinna’s Vurugu franchise has increasingly positioned celebrity boxing as a major entertainment spectacle, blending fights with music and online entertainment.
The event has also attracted wider attention beyond entertainment circles.
During a National Assembly debate in April, MPs discussed the growing popularity of celebrity boxing in Kenya, with one legislator specifically mentioning Obinna’s role in organising the Mbavu Destroyer versus Majembe bout and noting how strongly the event had resonated with young people.
However, Kibe’s decision to walk away from Obinna’s platform could force the promoter to rethink what was expected to be one of Vurugu 3’s biggest attractions.
For now, Kibe says the fight itself remains alive, only the promoter has changed.
And with Kibe insisting that he can make more money outside Obinna’s event, the question now is whether the independent platform will deliver the lucrative showdown that fans have been waiting for.
The biggest battle, it appears, may have started before either man enters the boxing ring.
