Tanzania Mourns Death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, Husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan

Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the age of 73.

Hafidh died at about 8:00am while undergoing treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving medical care for a heart condition.

The death was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed the news to the nation on Monday morning.

“His death is a great loss to the nation and to his family,” Ndejembi said while announcing the passing of the First Gentleman.

Funeral preparations and arrangements for his final rites are currently underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, his hometown.

Hafidh and President Samia were married in 1978 and remained together throughout her rise through Tanzania’s political ranks. The couple had four children, including Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is a Member of Parliament and a political figure in Zanzibar.

Unlike his wife, Hafidh largely remained away from active politics, maintaining a low public profile while offering private support during President Samia’s political career.

He was a retired agricultural officer and academic who was known for maintaining a relatively quiet life away from the political spotlight.

His death has triggered messages of condolence from across East Africa and the African continent, with regional leaders and institutions expressing sympathy to President Samia and her family.

Kenyan President William Ruto was among those who sent condolences, joining other leaders in mourning the death of Tanzania’s First Gentleman.

The African Union Commission Chairperson also conveyed condolences, describing Hafidh’s passing as a loss to the Tanzanian leadership and people.

As Tanzania prepares to lay him to rest, tributes continue to pour in for a man who spent much of his public life supporting his wife while maintaining a discreet presence outside the political arena.
