Decomposed body of unknown man found at Koma Shrine in Machakos

Police in Matungulu, Machakos County, have launched investigations after the decomposed body of an unidentified man was found at Koma Shrine.

The body was discovered on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at around 2pm near the eighth Station of the Cross within the Koma Shrine in Koma Location.

According to police, the discovery was reported at Koma Police Post by the director of Koma Shrine Prayer Centre, Father Peter Mugambi, after he was alerted by the shrine caretaker.

Police officers visited the scene and found the decomposed body of an unidentified adult African male lying in a hilly, bushy section of the shrine.

A preliminary examination of the body revealed a suspected stab wound to the stomach, while the man’s left hand had been severed at the wrist.

Investigators also found blood stains on the grass near the body. The deceased’s shirt and jacket were recovered a few meters away from where the body was found.

No identification documents or other items that could immediately establish the man’s identity were recovered from the scene.

Police processed and documented the scene before removing the body to Kangundo Level Four Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending identification and a postmortem examination.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are ongoing.

And a 24-year-old casual worker drowned while attempting to swim across a dam in Kilonge Village, Mbeere South, Embu County.

The incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, 2026, police said.

Police officers from Gachoka Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mbeere South visited the scene and established that the deceased, identified as Henry Juma, was among nine casual workers employed at a farm owned by John Muriuki.

According to preliminary investigations, the workers had completed their day’s work and were preparing to leave the farm when Juma decided to cross the dam by swimming instead of using the usual bridge.

He reportedly reached the middle of the dam before shouting that he was tired. He then attempted to swim back towards the side from which he had started but was overwhelmed and drowned.

Volunteer divers later retrieved his body from the dam.

Police processed the scene and established that the body had no visible physical injuries. It was subsequently moved to the Embu Level Five Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
