An attack on Kitisuru Member of County Assembly (MCA) Alvin Olando in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, January 14, has sparked strong condemnation from both political and public figures.
Olando was assaulted by a group of individuals whom he claims were sent by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja due to their political differences.
“I was walking through the city when a group of goons attacked me from behind and started accusing me of being a thief,” Olando recounted.
“After the assault, I went to report the incident at Central Police Station and later sought medical treatment at Aga Khan Hospital.”
The attack has drawn widespread outrage from youth leaders in the Westlands Constituency, including ODM Youth Leader Evans Ochieng.
They condemned the assault as an attack on both an elected official and the democratic values that underlie the nation.
“As youth, we strongly reject all forms of political violence and thuggery.
Such cowardly acts are unacceptable in our society and have no place in a country striving for progress,” the group said in a statement.
“The attack on Olando is a violation of his rights, and we stand in solidarity with him.
Violence and intimidation are the tools of the weak, and we must not allow such actions to go unchecked.”
The youth also denounced the attackers, branding them as cowards who aim to destabilize unity and undermine community harmony.

They emphasized the need for political tolerance, mutual respect, and freedom of expression, calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.
“We urge law enforcement to investigate this thoroughly and ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.
Let this be a warning to those who think they can silence dissent through violence,” their statement continued.
“We also call on all leaders, regardless of political affiliation, to denounce this act and promote peaceful coexistence.
It’s crucial that we engage in dialogue and constructive debate instead of resorting to violence.”
Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi joined the condemnation, stating that the assault on Olando was not just an infringement on his personal rights but a direct attack on democracy and the rule of law.
“Such acts of political thuggery are a violation of the core principles of democracy,” Wanyonyi said.
“Those who engage in these primitive tactics are simply cowards who seek to destroy the freedoms and rights we hold dear.”
He further stressed the importance of fostering political tolerance and embracing diverse opinions.
“In today’s world, it’s unimaginable that some would resort to violence to suppress opposing views.
We must focus on building a peaceful, progressive society by welcoming and respecting differing opinions.”
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai also called on authorities to take swift action and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We condemn this cowardly act and urge the authorities to arrest those responsible. We all know this is thuggery, and it must not be allowed to continue,” Alai said.
The attack on Olando has highlighted the increasing concerns about political violence and the need for stronger measures to protect the rights and safety of elected leaders and citizens alike.
As calls for justice grow, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to ensure accountability and uphold the principles of democracy.
