TikToker Maria Wangari Kamunge, also known as Rish Kamunge, has been granted a sh. 5 million bond after being arrested and charged with fraud.
The bond was granted by Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina on Friday morning.
Kamunge’s defense team had contested the bond request, asking the court for an additional seven days to complete investigations.
However, Magistrate Onyina ruled that the prosecution had not provided sufficient reasons for her continued detention.
He pointed out that the prosecution had failed to show any risks to her safety or present evidence of multiple complainants.
The magistrate also ordered Kamunge to report to the investigating officer periodically until the case is resolved.
Kamunge, operating under the name Trustpine Verified Agent Ltd, stands accused of promising Kenyans job opportunities abroad in exchange for payments between sh. 200,000 and sh. 300,000.
However, after receiving the payments, she allegedly failed to deliver on her promises and became uncontactable.
Police reports indicate that multiple complaints were filed against Kamunge between January 1 and March 20, 2025.
The victims claimed they were instructed to send money via M-Pesa to an account registered under her name.
When the promised jobs never materialized, the victims attempted to contact Kamunge, but she had reportedly gone into hiding.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), 43 victims sent a total of Ksh. 12.9 million to Kamunge.
She was arrested on March 26, 2025, at an office building in Nairobi after members of the public alerted authorities and handed her over to Central Police Station.
Since her arrest, additional victims have come forward with similar allegations, leading the DCI to request an extension of Kamunge’s detention.
