Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Malindi, Kilifi County, have apprehended two robbery suspects believed to be part of a criminal gang responsible for a recent break-in in the area, resulting in the theft of property of unknown value.
One of the suspects, 34-year-old Victor Otieno, was arrested on Wednesday after police, acting on intelligence reports, set up an ambush along the Kilifi-Malindi Road.
According to police reports, Otieno was riding a motorcycle, Reg. No. KMGC 208C, with another suspect when they ignored officers’ orders to stop at Kilifi bridge. This led detectives to open fire.
“At approximately 3:30 p.m., a white Hawk motorcycle (Reg. No. KMGC 208C) was seen speeding from Malindi towards Mombasa.
When challenged to stop near the Kilifi bridge, the riders refused, prompting officers to fire,” a police report states.
“A shootout ensued, continuing towards Mnarani Centre, where the motorcycle lost control and veered off the road.”
Otieno was arrested, but the second suspect, who reportedly fired at the officers during the chase, managed to escape. Police pursued the fleeing suspect up to the Mtwapa area, but were unable to locate him.
The operation continued through the night, leading to the arrest of another suspect, 74-year-old Msilim Salim Msilim.
During the raid, authorities made significant recoveries, including two motorcycles (Reg. Nos. KMGB 004M, a red Boxer, and KMGE 209V, a Honda), a silver Toyota Corolla (Reg. No. KDP 966N), two gold chains, two gold earrings, nine rings, two bracelets, baby rings, a jewelry box, and other assorted items.
The two arrested suspects remain in custody, awaiting arraignment, while efforts to capture the suspect who escaped are ongoing.
