See How A WhatsApp Status Update Led DCI Officers To Arrest Two Women In Awasi

Two women were arrested on Tuesday, April 15, after a WhatsApp status update triggered an investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The post featured one of the women holding a firearm and issuing a veiled threat.

According to a report from the DCI, officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, in collaboration with local detectives in Nyando, tracked down the woman after receiving reports about her alarming status update.

In the post, she posed with a Canik pistol and issued a stern warning to any man considering ending a relationship with her.

The investigation led officers to a two-bedroom residence in Awasi town, where the woman lived with her friend who later became her co-accused.

A thorough search of the home resulted in the discovery of the firearm, which had been wrapped in clothes and hidden in a basin under the bed.

Detectives also recovered a counterfeit motorcycle number plate from the premises.

Both women were taken into custody and are currently undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.

The DCI has confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify any additional suspects linked to the illegal possession of the weapon.

This incident follows a similar case just two days earlier, where a man from Kirinyaga was arrested and charged for sending threatening messages via WhatsApp to Mwea Member of Parliament, Mary Maingi.

During a court appearance on Monday, April 14, the man was accused of sending a message with the intent to cause harm.

The charge stated: “On March 27, 2025, in an undisclosed location in Kenya, you knowingly used WhatsApp to send a threatening message from your phone number to that of Mary Maingi, knowing it would be harmful to the recipient.”

He was released on a sh100,000 bond or sh30,000 cash bail, with the case scheduled for mention on April 28.
