Japan Offers Fully Funded Scholarships To Kenyan Students For 2026 Intake


The Japanese government has announced fully funded scholarships for Kenyan students to pursue studies in Japan starting in April or September/October 2026.

The scholarships cover four categories: research (graduate), undergraduate, College of Technology, and Specialized Training College programs.

The Research Scholarship targets Kenyans aiming to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees.

Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1991, and hold at least a second-class upper undergraduate degree or a master’s.

The scholarship lasts 18 months to two years, including six months of Japanese language training.

Monthly stipends range from 143,000 to 145,000 yen (sh 128,000–130,000), with additional allowances for those in designated regions.

The Undergraduate Scholarship supports students seeking bachelor’s degrees.

Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 2001, and have a KCSE Mean Grade of “A Plain” with high scores in Mathematics, English, and Kiswahili.

The scholarship runs for five years (seven for medicine-related fields), with a monthly stipend of 117,000 yen (approx. sh 105,000), plus regional allowances.

The College of Technology Scholarship is for students interested in technical and engineering fields. Candidates must have at least an “A Minus” in key science subjects and be 18 years or older.

The program spans four years and offers the same monthly allowance and regional benefits as the undergraduate program.

The Specialized Training College Scholarship is for vocational training. Applicants must have a KCSE Mean Grade of “B Plain” with a strong background in Mathematics and English.

The scholarship covers three years, including one year of language training, with a monthly stipend of 117,000 yen.

Key Dates:

  • April 17, 2025: Applications open
  • May 16, 2025: Deadline for submission
  • June–July 2025: Exams and interviews
  • Oct 2025 – Jan 2026: Final screenings and placement
  • April/Sept 2026: Travel to Japan
