Senior Russian General Killed In Car Bombing Near Moscow Amid Escalating Tensions

Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, a high-ranking Russian military official, was killed on Friday, April 25, 2025, in a car bombing in Balashikha, a city just outside Moscow.

According to the Investigative Committee of Russia, a remotely detonated explosive device estimated to contain over 300 grams of TNT detonated as Moskalik walked past a parked Volkswagen Golf near his residence.

The blast caused a fiery explosion, killing the 59-year-old general, who served as deputy head of the Russian Armed Forces’ main operations directorate.

Footage shared on Telegram shows the burning vehicle outside a residential building in Balashikha.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the attack, which bears similarities to previous high-profile assassinations of Russian military figures.

Local media report that the car bomb was an improvised explosive device (IED) filled with pellets, suggesting a calculated and deadly intent.

This latest attack echoes past incidents believed to be linked to Ukraine’s covert operations.

In December 2024, Ukraine’s intelligence services claimed responsibility for the assassination of Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s chemical weapons program, who was killed by a bomb attached to a scooter.

That event prompted President Putin to publicly acknowledge shortcomings in the country’s security infrastructure.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high on the battlefield. On April 24, 2025, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a massive overnight assault involving 70 missiles and 150 drones.

At least 12 civilians were killed and over 80 injured including children during the strikes, which targeted Kyiv and other cities, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Cherkasy, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk.

Despite continued international diplomatic efforts, no ceasefire has been reached. The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions across the region.
