How to Edit a TikTok Video After Posting

Once you’ve posted a video on TikTok, you may quickly realize you want to make changes—perhaps there’s a typo in your caption, you forgot to tag someone, or you want to update your hashtags. While TikTok does not currently allow users to fully edit a video after posting (such as trimming clips or changing effects), there are a few workarounds and limited options to help you fix or improve your content after it goes live. Here is how to edit a TikTok video after posting.

What You Can Edit After Posting

TikTok does not allow you to directly edit the actual video once it has been uploaded and published. You cannot change visuals, sounds, filters, or other video-specific elements without deleting and reposting the entire video. However, you can still make minor changes like updating your video description or adjusting the privacy settings.

If you notice a mistake in your caption, hashtags, or tags, you’ll need to delete the original post and re-upload the video with the correct information. To make this process easier, TikTok allows you to save your video (along with any added music and effects) so you can quickly repost it.

How to Repost a Corrected Version

To make changes to a video you’ve already posted, first go to your profile and open the video in question. Tap on the three dots at the bottom right corner of the screen to open the menu. From there, tap “Save Video” to download the clip to your phone’s gallery. This will keep your edits, music, and effects intact.

Once the video is saved, tap the plus (+) icon to upload it again. Before posting, you’ll be able to make the necessary changes—whether it’s adjusting the caption, changing the thumbnail, or tagging someone correctly. When you’re satisfied, tap “Post.” Finally, don’t forget to go back and delete the original video to avoid duplicate content on your profile.

Alternative: Use the Repost Feature with a New Caption

If you don’t want to go through the process of deleting and re-uploading, TikTok recently introduced a repost feature. Although this doesn’t allow you to edit the video itself, you can repost your own content with a new caption and additional commentary. This is useful for drawing fresh attention to a video while correcting minor issues or providing updates.

To do this, go to the video and tap the share icon (arrow) and select “Repost.” Add your updated caption or context in the comment section or as a reply to your own video to clarify changes.
