How to Turn On DMs on TikTok

Direct Messages (DMs) on TikTok allow users to privately communicate with friends, followers, or mutual connections. Whether you want to share videos privately, chat with your followers, or respond to messages from your audience, enabling the DM feature is essential. However, TikTok has privacy settings in place that may restrict who can send or receive messages, especially for users under the age of 16 or those with private accounts. Here’s how to turn on DMs on TikTok.

Accessing Message Settings

To begin, open the TikTok app and go to your profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your screen. Next, tap the three-line menu icon at the top right corner to open the settings menu. From the list, select “Settings and privacy.” This section houses all the controls you need to manage your account’s privacy and communication settings.

Within “Settings and privacy,” tap on “Privacy” and then scroll down to find the “Direct messages” option. This is where you can enable or adjust who is allowed to send you messages.

Choosing Who Can Message You

Inside the Direct Messages settings, you will find options that let you choose who can send you a message. You can allow messages from everyone, friends (people you follow who follow you back), or turn them off entirely. If you want to turn on DMs, select either “Friends” or “Everyone,” depending on your comfort level. Choosing “Everyone” opens your inbox to messages from all users, while “Friends” limits messages to mutual followers.

If the DM setting is set to “No one,” this means no one will be able to message you, and you won’t be able to start or receive conversations. To enable DMs, simply change this option to one of the available alternatives.

Things to Keep in Mind

TikTok only allows DMs for users aged 16 and older. If you are under 16, the option to send or receive messages will not be available. Additionally, if your account is set to private, your ability to send or receive messages may also be restricted based on your privacy settings and mutual connections.

To ensure you can use DMs properly, make sure your app is updated to the latest version. This can resolve issues where DM options may not appear due to outdated software.

Managing Conversations

Once DMs are turned on, you can access your inbox by tapping the “Inbox” icon at the bottom of the home screen and then selecting the paper airplane icon in the top-right corner. From there, you can view messages, respond, or start a new chat by searching for a user. If you receive unwanted messages, TikTok also allows you to report or block users directly from the message thread.
