Autopsy Reveals Blood Clot Caused Death of Man Allegedly in Police Custody in Kitale

An autopsy has confirmed that 35-year-old Samson Ouma died from a blood clot, amid allegations that he passed away while in police custody in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

Ouma had reportedly been held at GK Main Prison in Kitale for two weeks before his death.

The post-mortem was conducted on September 23, 2025, by government pathologist Dr. Walter Nalianya at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Dr. Nalianya reported that Ouma died as a result of pulmonary thromboembolism a condition where a blood clot blocks the vessels carrying blood from the heart to the lungs.

The clot, he noted, appeared to have originated from an injury sustained on Ouma’s shoulder.

“During the dissection, we found a clot within the pulmonary vessels. That was the direct cause of death,” Nalianya stated.

The autopsy further revealed that Ouma suffered from severe cellulitis in his left arm and extensive bruising across his body.

His arms were significantly swollen, with some injuries believed to have occurred days before his death.

The findings have fueled demands for justice from Ouma’s family, who received the post-mortem report on September 25 at Kijana Wamalwa Funeral Home.

His mother, Margaret Adhiambo, insisted that her son was in good health prior to his arrest and blamed the police for his untimely death.

“He was healthy when they took him. We want to know what happened to him while in custody,” she said.

However, police have denied claims that Ouma died inside the prison facility.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Moses Mutisya stated that Ouma was transferred to Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital after he fell ill.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
