Bruce McAvaney began his television career in 1978 at Adelaide’s ADS-7, where he read sports news and produced the Racetrack program. His media profile grew in 1980 when he hosted the Adelaide segment of the Moscow Olympics broadcast for the Seven Network.
From 1981 to 1983, he served as Seven Adelaide’s chief sports presenter, lead SANFL commentator and host of the Magarey Medal broadcast.
During this period, he also joined Ten Melbourne as a sports newsreader. Most importantly, he gained national attention for his commentary at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Afterwards, he went on to cover major international events for Ten, including the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, 1987 World Athletics Championships in Rome and 1988 IAAF Grand Prix in Berlin. His other recognition came when he co-hosted the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Bruce McAvaney rejoined Seven Network in 1989 to ensure he covered the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. From then on, he covered the Melbourne Cup, World Athletics Championships, motor racing, Australian Open tennis, golf and every Summer Olympic Games from 1992 to 2020.
