Chaos Mars Madaraka Day Celebrations In Homa Bay As Journalists Assaulted, Valuables Stolen

Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay County were overshadowed by violence and chaos on Sunday, with several journalists injured after being assaulted by security officers at the entrance of the Raila Odinga Stadium.

The incident occurred as members of the press attempted to access the venue to cover the national event, which was presided over by top government officials.

Witnesses reported that the journalists were attacked without provocation, even after identifying themselves and displaying their press credentials.

Among those injured were Ephantus Maina of Royal Media Services and Mable Achieng of the Nation Media Group.

Two other journalists affiliated with the Standard Media Group were also reportedly assaulted during the melee.

According to eyewitness accounts, unknown individuals also took advantage of the commotion to steal mobile phones, cameras, and other equipment from the media team.

Some of the stolen items are said to include high-value digital gear used for live coverage.

The violence was not limited to members of the press. In the early morning hours, chaos erupted at the stadium as groups of youth allegedly ferried in by local politicians to artificially fill the venue turned against attendees, snatching wallets, mobile phones, and other personal belongings.

Police were seen struggling to contain the situation as the crowd swelled and tensions grew.

“This was supposed to be a celebration of our independence and unity, but instead we were beaten and robbed while trying to do our jobs,” said one of the assaulted journalists, speaking under condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is expected to issue a statement condemning the incident and demanding accountability from the security agencies involved.

Human rights organizations and press freedom advocates have also expressed concern over the growing trend of violence against journalists in Kenya, particularly during state functions and politically charged events.

No official comment has yet been released by the police or the Interior Ministry regarding the incident, though calls are mounting for a swift investigation and public apology.

This year’s Madaraka Day meant to commemorate Kenya’s attainment of internal self-rule in 1963 has instead cast a grim spotlight on the state of security, media freedom, and political manipulation in public mobilizations.
