DCI arrests suspected drug trafficker after fatal accident, recovers sh34M worth of bhang in Migori

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Rongo Sub-County are holding a suspect under tight police guard at Migori County Referral Hospital following a dramatic road accident that exposed a large narcotics trafficking operation.

The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Samson Ayiera Chacha, was involved in a serious crash on April 24, 2026, while driving a trailer registration number KBS 548H along the Migori–Rongo route. Police say he lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and plunged into River Kuja.

Chacha sustained serious injuries in the incident and was rescued by members of the public before being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. Officers have since maintained security at the facility as investigations continue.

According to investigators, the accident triggered a recovery operation that led to the retrieval of the submerged trailer from the river days after the crash. The vehicle was later towed to Kamagambo Police Station, where a thorough inspection uncovered a large consignment of suspected cannabis sativa.

Anti-Narcotics officers from Isebania were immediately called in to take over the case. A detailed search confirmed that the trailer was ferrying 1,137.8 kilogrammes of bhang, with an estimated street value of Sh34.1 million.

“The recovered consignment is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating along cross-border and regional transport routes,” a security source said.

Police believe the drugs were being transported through established trafficking channels and have launched further investigations to establish the wider network behind the consignment.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect remains under guard at Migori County Referral Hospital and will be arraigned in court upon discharge to face charges related to drug trafficking and transportation of illegal narcotics.

The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to cracking down on drug traffickers, warning that intensified surveillance and intelligence-led operations will continue across major transport corridors.

Members of the public have also been urged to assist security agencies by reporting suspicious activities through the toll-free number 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000 under the #FichuaKwaDCI initiative.
