The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Tyrus Kamau Githinji, the driver of a Climax Company Ltd bus involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo.
In a statement released on December 16, the DCI said detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, which occurred on December 13 at around 2:19 a.m. in the Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Jirongo’s vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser bearing registration number KCZ 305U, was involved in a head-on collision with a public service vehicle bus, registration KCU 576A, owned by Climax Company Ltd.
According to the DCI, the impact of the collision was severe, forcing Jirongo’s vehicle approximately 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to a halt about 50 metres away.
Following the incident, homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory were dispatched to the scene.
The team carried out a detailed examination, collected exhibits, and reviewed CCTV footage from Eagle Petrol Station located near the crash site.
The footage shows that Jirongo drove into the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. but did not refuel.
He exited the station at 2:19:10 a.m. and made a right turn towards Nairobi. Moments later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the bus was captured ramming into his vehicle.
The bus driver, Tyrus Githinji, has since been questioned by detectives after earlier recording a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base.
He was released on cash bail pending the conclusion of investigations into the cause of the crash and possible dangerous driving.
The DCI said the driver is required to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22 as investigations continue.
