Detectives Bust Suspected Illicit Cigarette Network in Githunguri

Detectives have uncovered a suspected illicit cigarette distribution network in Githunguri Township, Kiambu County, following an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the seizure of assorted cigarettes and bundles of suspected counterfeit Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise duty stamps.

The operation targeted businessman Patrick Muiruri Mwangi, who is suspected of dealing in uncustomed and smuggled cigarette products.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), detectives acted on intelligence before launching undercover surveillance on two premises linked to Mwangi.

The officers monitored the suspect’s movements and activities before moving in to conduct a search of the premises.

During the operation, detectives recovered several boxes and loose packets of cigarettes, as well as bundles of excise duty stamps believed to be counterfeit.

The DCI said the premises have since been secured as investigations continue.

“Detectives mounted undercover surveillance on two premises linked to the suspect, carefully piecing together his movements and activities before making their move,” the agency said.

The seized items are expected to undergo further examination by the KRA Investigations and Enforcement team to establish their authenticity and determine the extent of the suspected illicit trade.

However, Mwangi reportedly escaped arrest during the operation and remains at large as detectives pursue leads to locate him.

The DCI said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle networks involved in the distribution of counterfeit and illicit goods.

The agency maintained that such operations are aimed at protecting legitimate businesses while also safeguarding government revenue from illegal trade.

“The operation underscores the DCI’s resolve, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, to dismantle networks dealing in counterfeit and illicit goods, protect legitimate businesses and safeguard government revenue,” the agency said.
