Four suspects have been arrested and more than 66 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa recovered in a coordinated crackdown on suspected narcotics trafficking in Busia and Bungoma counties.
In Busia County, detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigation Bureau (NANIB) intercepted a Fuso lorry, registration number KDU 981Y, along the Busia-Kisumu Highway following an intelligence-led operation.
The lorry was reportedly transporting cereals to Nairobi when detectives stopped it for inspection.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 14 bales of cannabis sativa packed in two sacks and concealed beneath dry cassava, in what investigators believe was an attempt to evade detection.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the seized cannabis weighed 59.15 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of Sh1,774,500.
Two suspects identified as Evans Josiah Mugambi and Moses Murambula Odwera were arrested during the operation and taken into custody.
“Acting on intelligence, detectives intercepted a Fuso lorry, registration number KDU 981Y, along the Busia-Kisumu Highway,” the DCI said.
The operation was also extended to neighbouring Bungoma County, where officers from Bungoma Police Station intercepted another vehicle suspected of ferrying narcotics.
The officers were conducting patrols along the Siritanyi-Mateka Road when they stopped a grey Toyota Probox, registration number KCK 089M, for inspection.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of five bales of cannabis weighing seven kilogrammes. The drugs had allegedly been wrapped in yellow tape and concealed inside a sack.
Police arrested two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Boaz Kwamba and Peter Ndungu, in connection with the consignment.
The four suspects remain in custody as officers complete investigations and prepare them for arraignment.
The impounded vehicles and recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits as investigations continue.
The DCI said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to disrupt narcotics trafficking networks and bring those involved in the illegal trade to justice.
“The DCI remains relentless in the fight against narcotics trafficking, dismantling trafficking networks and ensuring that traffickers face the full force of the law,” the agency said.
