Elderly among three people who drowned in separate incidents

At least three people died in separate drowning incidents reported on Tuesday, police said.

In the first incident, police in Nyando Sub-County, Kisumu County said they had launched investigations after the body of an elderly woman was found floating in River Nyando.

The incident was reported on March 17, 2026, at around 10:45 a.m. by a Grade Nine pupil who had gone to work on a farm near the river.

The student told police that at about 8:30 a.m., he spotted a body drifting downstream from the Muhoroni direction towards Ahero.

Police officers who responded to the scene confirmed that the body belonged to an unidentified female adult estimated to be about 60 years old.

The remains were retrieved and moved to Ahero County Hospital mortuary, where they are being preserved pending identification and a postmortem examination.

Authorities have urged members of the public with missing relatives to report to the facility to assist in identifying the deceased as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.

Elsewhere, a family in South Kinangop Sub-County, Nyandarua County, is mourning the tragic death of a three-year-old girl who drowned in a pit at a neighbour’s homestead.

The incident, reported on the evening of March 16, 2026, occurred in Kageraini sub-location within Nyakio Ward.

According to police, the child had been playing with two other minors when she accidentally slipped and fell into a pit approximately one-and-a-half metres deep, used for storing animal waste.

Her grandfather, who witnessed the aftermath, managed to retrieve her body in an attempt to save her life, but she had already died.

Authorities said the child was the last born in a family of four and lived with her mother, Jacinta Njoki, whose home is located about 50 metres from the grandfather’s residence. The mother was reportedly away at the time of the incident.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers posed by uncovered pits and other hazardous structures in homesteads, especially to young children.
