The Kenyan government has intensified surveillance and preparedness measures against Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), amid growing concerns over potential cross-border health threats in the region.
In a move aimed at strengthening national health security, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, conducted an assessment visit to the country’s busiest airport to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing disease prevention and response measures.
The inspection focused on critical areas including passenger screening procedures, thermal scanners, isolation facilities, laboratory preparedness, aircraft and wastewater surveillance systems, as well as emergency response coordination mechanisms.
During the visit, Muthoni commended frontline health workers stationed at the airport for their commitment and vigilance in protecting the country from infectious disease outbreaks.
Ministry of Health Issues Assurance
According to the Ministry of Health, Kenya currently has no confirmed Ebola cases, but authorities remain on high alert due to the continued risk posed by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases globally.
The Ministry said it has enhanced screening at all major points of entry, deployed additional health personnel, expanded laboratory diagnostic capacity, accelerated specimen processing, and strengthened surveillance systems across air, sea, and land borders.
“Kenya has no confirmed Ebola cases. However, the country remains vigilant and continues to strengthen preparedness measures to ensure rapid detection and response to any public health threat,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry further urged Kenyans to remain alert, practice proper hand hygiene, seek medical attention whenever they feel unwell, and rely on official government communication channels for accurate health information.
“Preparedness, vigilance and coordinated action remain Kenya’s strongest defence against Ebola and other emerging public health threats,” the Ministry emphasized.

Why Kenya Is Taking Extra Precautions
Kenya’s heightened preparedness comes as health authorities worldwide continue monitoring outbreaks of deadly viral diseases, including Ebola, which has historically caused severe epidemics in parts of Africa.
Ebola is a highly infectious viral disease that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials.
Symptoms often include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
The disease has one of the highest fatality rates among infectious illnesses, making early detection and rapid containment critical.
Past outbreaks in countries such as Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Guinea have demonstrated how quickly the virus can spread if surveillance systems are not robust.
As a regional transport and business hub with significant international travel traffic, Kenya remains vulnerable to imported cases, prompting authorities to maintain strict monitoring at airports and border crossings.
Strengthening National Preparedness
Health officials say the government’s strategy extends beyond airports.
Rapid response teams have been placed on standby, healthcare workers continue receiving specialized training, and public health surveillance systems are being upgraded to detect unusual disease patterns quickly.
The Ministry also highlighted the importance of community awareness, noting that public cooperation plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
With global travel continuing to increase and health threats emerging in different parts of the world, Kenyan authorities insist that maintaining strong preparedness systems is essential to safeguarding public health and preventing future outbreaks.
For now, officials maintain that there is no cause for panic, but stress that continued vigilance remains necessary as the country works to protect its citizens from Ebola and other emerging diseases.
