Police in Machakos County launched a murder investigation following the death of an 85-year-old woman who succumbed to injuries believed to have been inflicted during a brutal assault.
The victim, identified as Annah Bukutsa Muasya, died on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Mwala Level 4 Hospital after she was rushed there from her home in Kathama Village, Mwala Sub-County.
According to police, the incident came to light after the woman’s daughter-in-law reported the death.
She told investigators that on Saturday morning, the elderly woman visited her house and asked for a cup of tea. As she served her, she noticed the victim’s clothes were soaked in blood around the neck and chest, with blood appearing to ooze from her head.
When questioned, the elderly woman insisted that nothing was wrong. She finished her tea and returned to her house, and no further action was taken at the time.
On Sunday afternoon, after failing to see her since the previous day, the daughter-in-law went to check on her. She found the door unlocked and discovered the woman lying on the floor, still bleeding from the head and private parts.
Neighbours helped rush her to Mwala Level 4 Hospital, but she died while receiving treatment.
Police said doctors later shaved the victim’s head and discovered three deep stab wounds. She was also found to have been bleeding from her private parts, raising suspicions that she had suffered a violent assault.
Despite repeated efforts by relatives and medical personnel to establish how she sustained the injuries, the victim never disclosed what had happened before she died.
Crime scene investigators processed the scene, and the body was moved to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Police have opened investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
And a 45-year-old mentally challenged man died after a fire broke out at his family’s home in Ikolomani, Kakamega County, in the early hours of Sunday.
Police said the incident occurred at about 1 a.m. at a homestead in Machemo Village.
The deceased, identified as Erick Imbwakha Ilesa, was found dead inside the house after the blaze was extinguished.
Police visited the scene and established that the fire had razed the sitting room but did not spread into the bedroom where Erick was.
Although his body had no visible burn injuries, investigators suspect he died after inhaling toxic smoke from the fire, leading to suffocation.
The body was moved to the Kakamega County General Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police have launched investigations into the cause of the fire.
