A 21-year-old student at Eldoret National Polytechnic has died following what authorities believe was a botched self-induced abortion.
Winnie Jelagat was discovered dead at her residence in Teleview Estate on Thursday morning after suffering severe hemorrhage and significant blood loss.
Friends who went to check on Jelagat made the grim discovery after their repeated attempts to wake her were met with silence.
They found her clutching her phone, apparently attempting to make a call for help, with her other hand resting on the bed.
Witnesses believe she was trying to seek assistance but was tragically overwhelmed by pain and blood loss before she could connect with anyone.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the incident, using the opportunity to issue a warning to students.
He strongly urged those in distress to seek professional medical care rather than resorting to harmful self-treatment.
