Eleven arrested in government crackdown on illegal mining in Migori and Siaya

Eleven suspects, nine foreigners and two Kenyans, have been arrested in a nationwide operation targeting illegal mining in Migori and Siaya counties.

In Siaya County, officers from the Mining Police Unit and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two foreign nationals in the Yamo-Oloko area of Bondo Sub-County.

The operation, ordered by Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho, led to the seizure of three sealed cartons of gelignite explosives weighing 25 kilograms each, 72 explosive charges, and 137 shock tubes.

The two suspects are expected to appear in court for case mention on December 22.

In a separate raid in Migori County, authorities stormed Awovinar Property Ltd, where seven foreigners and two locals were allegedly conducting unlicensed mining operations, violating Section 202(1) of the Mining Act, Cap 306.

The foreigners have since been deported, while the two Kenyans, released on bond, are facing ongoing legal proceedings.

Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai lauded the successful operation, reaffirming the government’s resolve to eradicate illegal mining activities nationwide.

“The gloves are off. We’re taking decisive action against illegal mining, and we won’t stop until the law is upheld. No individual or organization will be above the law,” said PS Kimtai.

“Anyone found engaging in illicit mining activities will face the full force of the law, regardless of their status or influence.”

He further underscored that while mining remains a vital economic activity, it must be conducted within the bounds of the law and under proper licensing to meet regulatory and environmental standards.

The PS also noted that County Mining Officers have been deployed across the country to strengthen oversight, streamline sector operations, and ensure the mining industry contributes effectively to Kenya’s economic growth.
