Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi Defends Broad-Based Government, Slams Opposition Leaders

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has launched a spirited defense of the broad-based government under President William Ruto, while taking a swipe at opposition leaders whom he dismissed as unfit to lead Kenya’s transformation.

Speaking on Sunday in his Ugunja Constituency, Wandayi made it clear that, in his view, President Ruto remains the most credible and capable leader in the current political landscape far outweighing opposition figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and ex-Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

“If you give me a choice between Gachagua, Kalonzo, Matiang’i …etc on one side and President William Ruto on the other side, I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that I will go with Ruto any day, any time,” Wandayi declared, drawing applause from local supporters.

Wandayi, a longtime ally of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, praised the growing cooperation between President Ruto and Odinga, calling it a key pillar of the so-called “broad-based government” that he said is working tirelessly to rescue the economy and improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans.

“The broad-based government has made great efforts to turn around the economy of this country and to make life more bearable,” he stated.

He urged Kenyans to support the government’s ongoing economic and social reforms, crediting recent policy moves with stabilizing the cost of living and creating a more inclusive national agenda.

Wandayi’s remarks come amid mounting political tensions as former allies-turned-critics, including Gachagua and Matiang’i, gear up for a bruising contest ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His comments signal continued efforts by Ruto’s administration to consolidate support and fend off a rising opposition bloc.
