Fisherman dies after crocodile attack at Kisumu beach


A 30-year-old fisherman died after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing at Nanga Beach in Seme Sub-county, Kisumu County.

The victim, identified as Kennedy Onyango Ondijo, was reportedly fishing at the beach on Sunday morning when a crocodile bit him on the right leg.

According to police, Ondijo sustained serious injuries during the attack and was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

Despite efforts by medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at about noon while undergoing treatment.

His body was later moved to the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Authorities said officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service stationed at Ndere Island National Park were informed of the incident and are expected to investigate the attack.

The latest tragedy highlights the continued danger faced by communities living and working along the shores of Lake Victoria, where human-wildlife conflicts involving crocodiles remain a recurring concern. Authorities have repeatedly urged fishermen and residents to exercise caution when operating in areas known to be inhabited by the reptiles.

And police in Nyandarua County arrested a 32-year-old woman in connection with the killing of a man following an alleged assault outside their rented residence.

The incident was reported after Hillary Kusimba Miendo, 23, sustained severe head injuries during an attack early Sunday morning.

According to police, the deceased’s colleague, reported that at about 4.30am, Miendo was allegedly assaulted using a stone by a 32-year-old woman, following circumstances that are now under investigation.

The victim was rushed to Nyahururu Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing medical care.

Police officers visited the scene outside the pair’s rented house and recovered a blood-stained stone believed to have been used in the assault. A black marvin hat belonging to the deceased was also recovered as an exhibit.

Investigators later traced the suspect to Oljabet Hospital, where she was reportedly receiving treatment. She was arrested immediately after being discharged and escorted to Ol Joro Orok Police Station, where she remains in custody pending her arraignment before the Ol Kalou Law Courts.

Police said they will seek custodial orders to allow completion of investigations before charging the suspect.

The body of the deceased has been moved to Nyahururu General Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination as detectives continue with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
