Former Cabinet Minister and longtime Kilgoris Member of Parliament Gideon Sitelu Konchellah has died after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest.
Sources close to the family said Konchellah passed away on Saturday, June 13, bringing to an end a political career that spanned nearly two decades and leaving leaders and residents of Narok County in mourning.
Konchellah was a prominent figure in Kenya’s political landscape, serving as the Member of Parliament for Kilgoris Constituency from 2003 to 2022 under different political parties, including PNU, URP and Jubilee.
Beyond Parliament, he served in the Cabinet of former President Mwai Kibaki as Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons between 2006 and 2007.
During his tenure, Konchellah played a key role in the implementation of the Refugee Act of 2006, legislation that reformed Kenya’s refugee management system and replaced the colonial-era Control of Aliens Act.
The law established a more comprehensive framework for the registration, protection and management of refugees in the country.
After serving several terms as MP, Konchellah opted not to defend his parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Election, instead contesting for the Narok Senate seat. However, his bid was unsuccessful.
Tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, colleagues and constituents, many describing him as a dedicated public servant and influential leader in Narok County.
Confirming the news, current Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli paid tribute to his predecessor and successor in Parliament.
“I have sadly learnt of the death of Honourable Gideon Konchellah, former MP for Kilgoris Constituency. The late Konchellah was both my predecessor and successor,” Sunkuli said.
“He served Kilgoris for 20 years, but the cruel hand of death has taken his life. May God rest him in eternal peace,” he added.
Konchellah is remembered for his lengthy service in Parliament, his contribution to immigration reforms, and his influence on political affairs in Narok County and the larger Maasai region.
By the time of publication, the family had not released an official statement regarding funeral arrangements, while leaders across the political divide continued to send messages of condolence to his family and supporters.
