A 20-year-old university student died after being buried under a heap of soil while harvesting sand in Nyatike Sub-County, Migori County.
According to police, the incident was reported at around 5:00 p.m. on June 12, 2026.
Police visited the scene at Akello Kakoth Sub-location.
The victim was identified as Hoctive Omondi Ochieng, a student at the Technical University of Mombasa.
Police found his body lying at the scene after it had already been retrieved from the soil that had covered him.
Preliminary investigations established that Ochieng was harvesting sand alongside two friends when a heap of soil suddenly collapsed, trapping him underneath.
He sustained a visible head injury and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Crime scene officers processed the area before the body was transferred to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police have classified the incident as an accidental death and are continuing with routine investigations.
Meanwhile, Police in West Pokot County have launched a murder investigation following the death of a nine-month-old baby boy in a suspected poisoning incident at Misitin Village in Kipkomo Sub-County.
According to police, the child’s mother, 20-year-old woman, left her son under the care of her husband at around 11:30 a.m. on June 12, 2026, while she went to fetch water.
Upon returning home, she reportedly found the infant unconscious and vomiting a white, foul-smelling foamy substance from the mouth.
Suspecting poisoning, family members rushed the child to hospital, but he died before receiving treatment.
Police officers visited the scene and conducted a search of the family’s house. During the search, investigators recovered two 100ml bottles of acaricides identified as Triatix and Actraz from a locked green metallic box inside the room.
The chemicals were seized as exhibits for forensic analysis as detectives sought to establish whether they were linked to the child’s death.
The body was moved to Kapenguria Referral Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
Police have identified the stepfather as the main suspect in the case, and investigations are ongoing.
Authorities are awaiting autopsy and laboratory results to help establish the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
