“Hii yake sasa ni ngumu kusema. I really pray for his restoration. Brilliant young mind wasting away,” Aoko commented.

Others, however, shut down Alinur holding that the video he shared is an old one, way before he was taken to rehab by Mike Sonko.

“You have been reduced to an attention seeker now, I think this is an old photo of him but you want to tarnish his reputation,” one Mithika Mohaa wrote.

The latest turn of events unfolded barely a year after Kimani Mbugua checked out of rehab in Mombasa.

Mbugua was admitted at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Mental Rescue Center in mid 2024, with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko taking it upon himself to cover his medical expenses fully.

Four months later, Sonko shared an update indicating that Mbugua, alongside another former journalist Eunice Omollo, was on course to recover fully.

“There is God in heaven and may His name be praised. Former royal media journalist Kimani Mbugua and his NTV colleague Eunice Omollo are healed and fully recovered,” Sonko posted.

Videos that went viral online showed a jovial Kimani Mbugua all smiles as he sang a rendition of Sauti Sol’s popular song Feel My Love.

Talking about his recovery journey, the journalist expressed gratitude to the former governor noting;

“Whatever you have done for me, only God can pay you back. Thank you so much to the community in Miritini and Mike Sonko.”

“As you can see, I have gained weight here in Mombasa. I’ve enjoyed staying here. Were it not for other commitments, I would have extended my stay,” he added.

In May 2024, Mbugua openly admitted that he was struggling with his mental health after a series of bizarre social media outbursts.

It was around that time that comedian Oga Obinna offered to help Mbugua, who was initially admitted to Mathari Hospital before getting transferred to Mombasa.
