The sudden demise of former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua on Wednesday, October 15, has left the country in shock and mourning.
News of his passing came barely three hours after reports of Raila Odinga’s death in India, sparking an emotional wave across social media as Kenyans shared their tributes and condolences.
As tributes poured in, many sought clarity on the cause of the journalist’s untimely death. Details remained scarce until former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had been supporting Mbugua’s recovery spoke out.

Sonko, who had been sponsoring Mbugua’s treatment at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and hinted at the circumstances surrounding the journalist’s death.
In a statement shared on his social media pages and seen by Nairobi News, Sonko revealed that Mbugua is believed to have taken his own life while undergoing treatment at the facility.
“I am saddened to hear about the premature demise of former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre.
It is believed that he may have taken his own life. I will issue a comprehensive statement once the police report is out.
In the meantime, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kimani’s family, friends, and colleagues. I pray that God grants them strength and comfort during this difficult time.
May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Sonko wrote.

Following Sonko’s post, thousands of Kenyans flooded the comment section to mourn the young journalist and offer condolences to his family.
Mbugua had been receiving treatment at the facility after reportedly relapsing following an earlier recovery at a different rehabilitation center.
Sonko had been instrumental in his recovery journey, covering his medical expenses and ensuring he received the necessary support and care.
