Former cop Shakur thanks Kenyans for blessing him with Sh1.4 million within a month

Former police officer and prison warder popularly known as Cop Shakur has expressed deep gratitude to Kenyans after they came together to raise Sh1.4 million for him within just a month.

Shakur took to social media on Friday, January 9, to thank well-wishers from across the country who responded to his appeal and stood with him during one of the most difficult moments of his life.

In an emotional post, he described the support as overwhelming, noting that the contributions restored his hope and faith in humanity.

Cop Shakur had recently gone public to plead with Kenyans to help him raise funds to clear a debt that had seen him arrested and briefly detained.

His arrest sparked public sympathy, especially among young people and human rights advocates who viewed his troubles as part of a larger struggle facing outspoken Kenyans.

According to Shakur, his problems began several months ago after he was relieved of his duties as a prison warder.

He was fired for allegedly supporting the Gen Z maandamano, a wave of youth-led protests that swept across the country as young Kenyans demanded accountability, economic reforms and better governance.

His participation and perceived support for the protests reportedly put him at odds with his employers, eventually costing him his job.

Losing his source of income plunged Shakur into financial distress, making it difficult for him to meet basic obligations, including servicing debts.

Matters worsened when creditors pursued legal action, leading to his arrest, a moment that prompted him to publicly share his story and seek help from the public.

The former officer’s appeal struck a chord with many Kenyans, who saw his situation as a reflection of the price paid by individuals who speak out or stand in solidarity with popular movements.

Contributions poured in from all corners of the country, with many describing their donations as a way of standing with him and sending a message of support to others facing similar hardships.

In his message of thanks, Shakur said the Sh1.4 million raised within a month would go a long way in clearing his debt and helping him start afresh.

He also promised to remain resilient and continue advocating for justice and the rights of ordinary Kenyans despite the challenges he has faced.

Cop Shakur’s story has since ignited wider conversations online about freedom of expression, the treatment of public servants who participate in civic movements, and the growing power of collective action in Kenya.

For Shakur, however, the outpouring of support represents more than just financial relief, it is a reminder that even in adversity, Kenyans can come together to uplift one of their own.
