Carren Atieno Muga, a former nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA), was apprehended on Saturday in connection with a violent incident that unfolded at Chemase Police Station in Nandi County, resulting in the lynching of a murder suspect.
This shocking event took place on January 3, when a furious mob overran the police station, dragging out the suspect and brutally stoning him, beheading him, and ultimately setting his remains on fire.
In a chaotic aftermath, the mob returned to the police station to vandalize the premises and ignite it in flames, injuring three police officers in the process.
Days later, Atieno Muga was arrested along the Chemelil-Miwani-Kisumu road as authorities linked her to a suspected organ-harvesting syndicate.
Evidence suggests that she is the mother of one of the main suspects involved in the heinous murder of Enock Kipsang.
Reports indicate that she attempted to flee the area, fearing retaliation from the community. Police also seized her vehicle, a Toyota Harrier, as part of the investigation.
Kipsang, aged 38, was found dismembered, with his body parts scattered along the roadside.
His head was later discovered submerged in a borehole, and his torso had been mutilated.
The disturbing details of the crime ignited outrage throughout Tinderet constituency, with over 3,000 residents gathering at the Chemase Police Post, demanding justice.
Prior to the lynching, Victor Kimtai, the alleged murder suspect, had exposed the organ-harvesting operation and threatened the safety of his own family members.
This prompted his mother to alert local authorities, leading to his arrest shortly before the mob descended upon him.
Additionally, police announced the recovery of the National and Kenya Police Service flags that had been stolen during the mob attack.
A spokesperson for the National Police Service (NPS) stated, “We are closely pursuing other key suspects involved in this case, as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Tinderet continues its work.”
In response to the violence, a meeting was convened by Deputy Inspectors General Eliud Lagat (Kenya Police) and Gilbert Masengeli (Administration Police) with senior security officers across Nandi sub-counties, aiming to promote peaceful coexistence among local communities in the wake of the tragic events.
