In a bid to enhance security during the Easter holiday, the government has directed that all public beaches along the Kenyan coast will be closed daily at 6:00 PM.
The move is part of a broader strategy to combat rising gang-related crime in the region.
Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno made the announcement in Mombasa, flanked by top officials from various security agencies.

He emphasized the need for increased vigilance and strategic planning as the coastal region prepares to welcome thousands of visitors over the festive period.
“These measures are aimed at ensuring smooth travel and safety for both residents and tourists.
This is a key tourist destination, and I want to assure both Kenyans and the international community that the coastal region remains safe and secure,” Nuno said.
To bolster enforcement, police and intelligence personnel will be deployed throughout the region, stationed strategically to respond quickly to any emerging issues.
In addition to beach closures, Commander Nuno outlined further safety measures targeting road travel.
Long-distance transport companies will be required to assign two drivers per vehicle to combat fatigue-related accidents.
Drunk driving will also be closely monitored, with intoxicated drivers facing immediate arrest and prosecution.
“We will not allow reckless driving to turn this holiday into a period of tragedy. Intoxicated drivers will be dealt with firmly,” he warned.
Nuno also reiterated earlier directives aimed at holding parents accountable for crimes committed by their children.

On March 25, he instructed chiefs and assistant chiefs in Diani to provide names of teenagers involved in gangs alongside their parents so that law enforcement could take joint action.
“The names of the children involved with gangs must be submitted together with those of their parents. They will face consequences together,” he ordered.
This renewed crackdown comes amid rising concerns over the notorious “Panga Boys” gang, which has been terrorizing Kwale County residents.
On March 25, the gang carried out violent attacks in Diani, leaving several people injured.
In disturbing footage shared on social media, the gang masquerading as protestors was seen storming residential homes armed with machetes, robbing and assaulting locals.
